Side Tracks | Todd Weisse – Hope | A Great Lo-Fi Rock EP

I should be cleaning our house for a birthday party for our son, who just turned 4 years old. I ended going to one of my favorite message boards. There was one of those “My son’s new EP. Hope you guys like it.”, posts you’ve seen on so many places.Β  That’s what I thought when I opened the thread over the Stone Pony London (Bruce Springsteeen message board).

I rarely get impressed by a music of a total stranger. Last time I’ve been impressed this much, has been in 2012 when I heard the music of L.R. Phoenix for the first time.

I do plenty of demo listening, and usually the demos are too polished (clean) and produced to sound like any other album there is. Kinda funny, those are demo recordings after all. In 90’s, demo releases had a very low fidelity, and you could tell instantly which was a demo and which not. But with the Millennials you can get a top studio quality with just your laptop and a microphone. Times have indeed changed.

EP starts with a track “Garden of Love“. You would expect the whole album to be an 80’s “Bon Jovi” type of rock. I would have chosen another track to start the EP. You will be rewarded at the end with the beautiful “Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained“. That’s one of my favorite tracks this year.

There’s Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Chris Isaak and grunge vibes going on. “Wasted time” could be one of the early Nirvana demos.

What I like the most about Todd Weisse’s Hope EP is the atmosphere it has. This is not a perfectly produced album, it doesn’t have a perfect fidelity. This EP could have been recorded in the 80’s or 90’s using 4-track recorder. Even the cover art looks like the album was found from a flea market.

How does this work with the speakers? I have no idea, I’m a family man, only way to listen music is via headphones.

Track list:

1. Garden of Love (04:04)
2. Pretty Lies (06:43)
3. Wasted Time (04:23)
4. Slow Me Down (06:11)
5. Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained (04:26)

Available on Bandcamp, also on Spotify

No, I’m not returning a favor to a message board member, I do enjoy a lot of this EP. I’m glad that there is still someone making out rock music. Now back to cleaning our house. Dishwasher is ready. πŸ™‚
