Upcoming Bruce Springsteen album High Hopes (2014) – My thoughts

Bruce Springsteen_High_Hopes_album_cover_

Let’s start with the cover. Bruce started using Twitter in last August (2013), and clearly he is following the latest trends with the Instagram styled album covers. High Hopes (the album) and single both have similar Instagram styled photos. High Hopes album cover has double the Springsteen, and maybe the album has double the guitar as well. Tom Morello (from The Rage Against The Machine) is playing even larger part on this album, when compared to the previous Wrecking Ball album. I’m sure that Mr. Morello will be joining the stage when the tour continues in 2014.

Bruce Springsteen has upgraded the E Street Band sound as well. We have heard two tracks from the new album already; “High Hopes” and “Dream Baby Dream”, and they both have more “industrial” sound than what we have heard previously from Bruce Springsteen & E Street Band.

Can we call this a new album? That’s the question.

“I felt they were among the best of my writing and deserved a proper studio recording.” – Bruce Springsteen

New record has three cover songs: High Hopes (Tim Scott McConnell), Just Like Fire Would (Chris J. Bailey), Dream Baby Dream (Martin Rev and Alan Vega).

High Hopes, American Skin (41 shots) live version and The Ghost of Tom Joad (solo album version) has been officially released previously. Harry’s Place is an outtake from the Rising sessions. Harry’s Place is also a likely candidate for a song where Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici can he heard.

“The Wall” was co-written with Joe Grushecky, and Bruce has played the song live couple of times during Devils & Dust tour.

There are only 5 completely new tracks that we know (pretty much) nothing about. “Down In The Hole”, “Heaven’s Wall”, “Frankie Fell In Love”, “This Is Your Sword” and “Hunter Of Invisible Game”.

Are these 5 totally new tracks? “Down In The Hole”, “Heaven’s Wall” and “Hunter Of Invisible Game” credits Brendan O’Brien as producer. Springsteen worked with O’Brien in 2002-2008. That would leave only two new songs.

Maybe Springsteen got the idea of re-recording some of the older tracks, when they’ve made the Darkness On The Edge Of Town anniversary box, which included re-recorded material. Or maybe he got an idea of recording this album, when they were searching for a new material for the Tracks 2 box, just notice that there are enough material to make a separate release. To me, this just feels more and more a follow up to the Tracks, rather than a real new album.

My opinion may change of course, when the album hit the stores in January 14, 2014. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to get new official release from Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band.

In the end; No matter what the album is going to be, Rolling Stone magazine will give it 5 stars. 😉

High Hopes album and various editions?

Are we going to see more “limited editions”? Currently has an exclusive edition that also includes a live DVD of Bruce and the E Street Band performing the entire “Born In The U.S.A.” album in London, England (June 30, 2013 at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, UK). Hopefully this is just a teaser, and we’ll see new Wrecking Ball DVD & Blu-ray edition, filled with videos from various locations. There’s no info bout the bonus DVD on

I don’t want to find myself buying various versions from Walmart, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target…
