Looking for the best concert camera phone (2013)?

Recording concerts with a phone – Which one should I get?

If you want to get a distortion free concert recording with your phone. Your options are pretty much limited to the Windows 8 phones (WP8) Nokia Lumia 620/720/810/820/822/920/925/928/1020, Symbian Belle phone Nokia PureView 808 (discontinued?), and the Android phone HTC One (with little caution, see the end of the post).

Problem with the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC 8x etc, is that they have poor microphones. Mobile phones mentioned earlier has built-in HAAC microphones (High Amplitude Audio Capture microphone) that tolerate really high sound pressure (up to 140dB!) giving distortion free recordings (with bass) pretty much in any concert situation.

UPDATE!

New camera phone alert! Nokia Lumia 1020: See this page for more info!

Paging Nokia Lumia 920/925/928 owners, Nokia just released Pro Camera update with new features (Lossless Zoom, stereo recording and much more!)

Some examples recorded with phones that have HAAC/Nokia Rich Recording technology:

Nokia Lumia 620 – Drums test

Where to get one? Nokia Lumia 620 at Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk

And just for the kicks, here’s my recording with the Nokia Lumia 620 and Nokia Pureview 808 (Lumia 620 used for video, and both phones used for audio). Bootleggers would call this a “matrix-recording”:

HTC One (2013)

Reserved for HTC One. Apparently they have used Nokia HAAC microphones without permission. Now some models comes with the built-in HAAC mic, but the never batch has different microphones? More about it when the whole situation is more clear.

Hopefully other phone manufactures also adds similar technology to their phones, as we all want great distortion free videos from concerts. I’m gonna update this blog post when new models comes along. πŸ™‚

  1. I’ve bought Lumia 620 few days ago. I’ve been recording with PureView 808 previously, and gonna do some concert recording with both of them this weekend. Side-by-side… It looks like the new HTC One also has similar technology to HAAC (although the price tag also goes high as kite). Gotta take a good look about it next week.

I’m really excited about the whole new microphone technology, can we finally say goodbye to to those badly distorted concert videos? πŸ™‚

  2. Most camera phones are simpler than separate digital cameras. Their usual fixed focus lenses and smaller sensors limit their performance in poor lighting. Lacking a physical shutter, most have a long shutter lag. Flash, where present, is usually weak. ‘
